On 18 July 2020, Somaliland Standard reported that Shaba Water Company, the piped water operator supplying Borama, was struggling to meet demand as the city's population rose. The report, by M.A. Egge, described the company's service as reaching “almost every household”, but did not provide coverage data or population figures.

The report cited Prof Dahir Mohamed Hadi, deputy head of Dawan Media Group, who called the challenge “quite monumental” and said sourcing water was extensive and costly, requiring aid as in other developing countries. It did not name any international NGO or specify funding amounts.

Shaba Water Company CEO Eng Abdirahman Abdisalan Sheikh Ali Jowhar told the publication that much of Borama's water had formerly come from eastern parts of the city, and that the company had explored and was drilling new boreholes in western areas, with the latest efforts in the Sakawa vicinity.

The 2020 report does not establish what has happened since. It gives no completion status, yield, or cost for the western or Sakawa boreholes, no current water production or demand figures, and no record of any NGO or government support. As of this report, no verifiable update on Shaba Water Company's operational status or supply capacity after July 2020 is available in the public record.
