The Somaliland Ministry of Health Development reported on 21 August 2025 that the president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilaahi Cirro, laid the foundation stone of a multi-specialty hospital in Burao during a working visit to the city. The ministry described the project as the largest and most modern hospital in Somaliland and the Somali region.
What the source records
According to the ministry report, the hospital will be funded by the president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and will be named after him. The ministry says it is designed to provide multi-specialty medical services of high quality in knowledge and equipment, and that it will replace medical services previously sought abroad. The president said the construction forms part of the government's commitment to strengthen health infrastructure. After the ceremony, he inspected the Burao hospital emergency department. What it means on site
A foundation stone sets the position and orientation of a building on its plot. For anyone following the works, that makes the ceremony the point from which site records should run: the plot boundary, the setting-out drawing and the ground investigation used under the foundations. Which specialities the hospital will house, its bed count, its power and water supply, and its waste and oxygen systems shape the later structural and services packages. The ministry report does not describe any of them, so those details can be confirmed only with the project's design documents or its engineers.
What the source does not establish
The report describes a ceremony and an intention. It does not give the hospital's size, bed capacity, cost, contractor, tender route or construction schedule, and it does not say whether design or site works have started. It attributes the funding to the president of the United Arab Emirates without describing an agreement, a budget line or a disbursement. The report's own date, 21 August 2025, is the as-of date. A signed contract, an awarded tender notice or a construction progress report from the implementing office would show the present state.
What to do next
Ask the Ministry of Health Development's infrastructure or projects office for the design stage, the plot location, the consultant or contractor appointment and the construction programme. If a contractor is named later, ask that firm for its site establishment and works schedule before planning any supply or service around the hospital.
