Somaliland Sun reported on December 27, 2020 that the upgrade of Maydh Port in Sanaag region has been launched, funded courtesy of Somaliland Development Fund Phase II.
The launch was officiated by Somaliland Minister for Livestock and Animal Husbandry Saeed Sulub. The Minister said he was pleased to launch the construction of the Maydh Fishing Port, which he said will help implement the Government's strategy for improved economic growth in the region.
According to Najah Mohamud Adam, Deputy Director of the Somaliland Development Fund, the project will remarkably contribute to the socio-economic development of Eastern Somaliland regions. The construction will last for one year. "By December 2021, we hope to officially open the port," the Deputy Director said. Upon completion, the new Maydh Jetty is expected to improve interconnectivity by sea between Berbera and the 750,000 people living in the hinterland of Sanaag and parts of Togdheer, according to the Deputy Director. The project is also expected to spur regional economic growth, enable the transport of fish to markets, and boost food security, employment and incomes.
The project became viable after the main donors to the Somaliland Development Fund Phase II programme, the UK, Denmark and the Netherlands, approved four agreements with the Somaliland Government to improve critical infrastructure, Somaliland Sun reported. The projects were prioritised by Phase II of the Government of Somaliland's National Development Plan and support roads, agricultural facilities, water systems and fisheries.
Somaliland Sun reported that the old jetty that has served Maydh Port for ages is set for replacement. The report does not name a contractor, consultant or implementing partner for the upgrade, nor does it give a contract value, total project cost or detail on which of the four donor agreements covers Maydh Port. No confirmation of construction progress or official opening since the December 2020 launch was provided.
