The role sits within the Nature, Climate and Energy practice area and supports the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme, which channels direct grants to non-governmental and community-based organisations. The assistant works under the National Coordinator, supporting both programme delivery and financial management of the country programme.
What you will do
- Help with day-to-day programme and project implementation so that work stays in line with expected results, outputs, objectives and work plans.
- Assist the National Coordinator in prescreening project concepts and proposals, including evaluating the financial component of proposals.
- Help develop and revise grant application forms, management tools and other programme documents.
- Advise potential grantees on project preparation processes and guidelines, and report on project development activities.
- Give day-to-day support and guidance to new and ongoing projects and their grantees.
- Assist with monitoring and evaluation, the grievance redress mechanism and field visits, and help organise National Steering Committee meetings and take minutes.
- Maintain working contacts with NGOs, government institutions, donors and other programme stakeholders.
- Review the supporting documentation of grantees' interim and final financial reports and process payment requests from grantees and vendors.
- Maintain the project and stakeholders' databases, prepare the grant disbursement table and calendar, track the country operating budget, manage petty cash and draft annual administrative and project budget proposals.
- Enter and extract data from the relevant systems, prepare financial reports, and follow up travel arrangements and daily subsistence allowance payments.
What you need
- Secondary education is required, or a bachelor's degree in Business or Public Administration, Environmental and Social Science, which is considered but not required.
- A certificate in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance gives a distinctive advantage.
- At least five years of administrative or programme experience with secondary education, or at least two years with a bachelor's degree, at national or international level.
- Demonstrated ability to review and edit documents and to produce meeting reports identifying key actions.
- Fluency in English and Somali is required, and knowledge of other UN languages is an asset.
- Computer literacy and use of office software such as MS Word and Excel are expected, with advanced spreadsheet and database knowledge and experience of web-based management systems being an asset.
Experience
The notice asks for progressively responsible administrative or programme experience. Experience of project management or support at rural or local community level, monitoring and evaluation and results-based management tools, programme financial management, and operational support including event management and logistics are each listed as assets or advantages rather than requirements.
How to apply
Submit your application through the employer's application page before the closing date of 16 November 2026, noting that applications close at 07:59 AM. If something here is wrong
The notice governs, not this page. Where the two disagree, the notice is right, and the desk wants to know: tell the desk and the entry is corrected or taken down the same day. An entry is also taken down at the request of the body that issued it.
